Once again, as in the olden days of 2008/9, I am asking for the music community's help. I've put the word out about the library's local music collection and I'm hoping this will result in an uptick in our donations of local music CDs. It's no secret that I've been busy, and I've had less time to go out and collect music for the library, so I'm reaching out to musicians, fans, labels to send some local music lovin' our way. Donations will have to be in CD format to be included in the collection, and should include: cover art and track listing. Receipts will be given at donor's request. You can either send your donation to: Ferndale Public Library, ATTN: Kelly Bennett, 222 E. Nine Mile Road, Ferndale, MI 48220 or simply drop them by the front desk. I can't wait to see what we get! Thanks for your help!

Odds and Ends...of the Year!

2011 is winding down and it's been a heck of a year here at the library. February saw us up and running again, delighted that all our old patrons (and tons of new ones) found their way back to us. In March, we started up First Stop Friday again with the electrifying Sheefy McFly and the Delorean and Electric Lamp Rays. We had a hugely successful Summer Concert series with The Bridge Project, Jeffrey Zook and Bret Hoag and The Candy Band. The music collection, both mainstream, indie and local has grown enough for us to have to expand the shelves already, and those CDs are being checked out in fat stacks. The new year promises more great bands for First Stop Friday, with Superbomb and Old Empire playing on January 6th. Next year's summer concert series will be a go thanks mostly to the bake and jam sale we held last month, and I'm mulling over some interesting, out of the ordinary options.

Later this month, the epic Mittenfest will grace Ypsilanti again. After raising a record $15,000 for youth literacy non-profit organization 826michigan (http://www.826michigan.org) last
year, Mittenfest will return with 5 days of music in its sixth consecutive year. Mittenfest VI will be held over New Year's weekend, December 28 through January 1 at Woodruff's in Ypsilanti, showcasing a range of independent musical talent from across the state and beyond. Highlights for me include FAWN, Ryan Allen and His Extra Arms, Matt Jones and the Reconstruction, Drunken Barn Dance, Electric Fire Babies, Black Jake and the Carnies, Passalacqua, Chris Bathgate, and the long-awaited return of Great Lakes Myth Society. Get your butt out to Ypsi this weekend!

Well, I suppose it happens with most blogs...things get in the way, embarrassment sets in, and a few months go by with no updates. It has happened here. But, I'm here to make amends. First Stop Friday: The Blueflowers and Woodman

Next Friday, the library will host another First Stop Friday show. This time The Blueflowers and Woodman will grace the "stage".

It took some reminding, but the upcoming show represents the 1 year anniversary of First Stop Friday. There was a big gap, to be sure, but it's hard to believe I've been doing this for a year. In a lot of ways, it feels longer, because the idea percolated for awhile, and there were some special events that included music which I organized. I hope that next September, I'll be looking back on a full year's worth of bands. As it is, I'm marveling at the talent I've had walk, stumble under the load of an amp and stride through the library's door to play music for free in what many consider to be an odd venue. Thank you bands of Michigan for being open to new things, amazingly generous and so so talented. I could do this thing for 50 years and always be surprised and astounded by what I hear from musicians in this area. Here's to another year!

Please note that July's First Stop Friday is not actually on the first Friday this month. Let's face it, no one is coming to a library show on the Friday before the Fourth of July. Summer Concert Series

We're broadening our musical horizons this summer with a summer concert series. We're gonna get some jazz and music for kids in here in addition to our FSF shows. Join us in our (hopefully) sunny courtyard for more free music!

First Stop Friday Recap: Shithouse Yonder and Electric Firebabies

It was another great Friday at the Ferndale Library. Shithouse Yonder played down and dirty punk-inspired rock and Electric Firebabies funked it up with sweet riffs, bombastic percussion and effects-laden vocals. Audiences for both were good especially considering the fact there was about a thousand things to do in town for Pride weekend. The addition of lights made me realize that it's only a matter of time before I start begging the library for funding toward our own set! Enjoy these videos and check out the photos that follow.

First Stop Friday; Electric Firebabies and Shithouse Yonder

This month brings us two super-fun bands, albeit in different ways. Shithouse Yonder is fast, loud, fun and punk-inspired. With clashing drums, driving guitars and vocals delivered with a bit of a sneer these guys will have heads bopping. Keep an ear out for "Dukes of Hazzard".
Electric Firebabies is electro-infused soul that will have you dancing before you even realize you've gotten out of your chair. There's definitely a B-52s vibe, with a lot more funk. Some have called it DJ Rock, I just call it a good time.

Once again, the talent around town astounds me. This past friday, Electric Lion Soundwave Experiment and Robin Goodfellow blew the doors off the library's community room. Electric Lions were loud in every good way and Robin Goodfellow was poppy and so danceable, I though I might realize my dream of a dance party in this joint. To top it all off, everyone in both bands was lovely. There are lots of good people in Detroit bands, and don't let anyone tell you differently.

I've got some pictures for you, but you should know that some snazzy videos should be available later this week. Keith Dalton, a man with lots of great video equipment and a passion for all things Ferndale is starting up a video clearinghouse for Ferndale events. Corrections, THE FRONT PAGE, and Amazing Coworkers

1. Please note that Robin Goodfellow will be taking Computer Perfection's place on our May 6th First Stop Friday bill. Don't fret, RG are going to give you an amazing show and CP will reschedule. Stay cool my babies!

2. You know how I feel about the following things: a) Timothy Monger b) positive press for the library/First Stop Fridays and c) THE FRONT PAGE. I love all of these things/people. Which is why it's super amazing that I was not only interviewed by Mike McConnell, the story appeared on the front page (with a picture of Tim Monger above the fold), and TM said the following lovely things about his experience at the FPL, "It was one of my favorite gigs we had last year,” said Monger, 28, of Britton in Lenawee County. “I was shocked at the turnout and reception for an after-hours library show. The audience was wide ranging in age and, while they were very attentive, there was also a nice loose feeling in the place.” Read the full story here.

3. Last but not least, the tireless local music journalist, Jeff Milo, who I am proud to say is a co-worker of mine, posted on the FPL Observer, not only an interview with new FSF family band, Robin Goodfellow, but appropriately spacey video of them. Check it all out here!

First Stop Friday: Computer Perfection and Electric Lion Soundwave Experiment

On the coattails of the best-attended FSF yet, is another amazing line-up at the Ferndale Library. Mark your calendars, people, this is gonna be super fun!

Computer Perfection, are decidedly pop, but not simply so. Slightly spacey, especially in the vocals, they put out songs that will have you bouncing along, and then when you're in the groove, you'll hear something surprising, which serves to draw you in even more. Seriously, I really feel like people are going to dance!

Electric Lion Soundwave Experiment are definitely spacey. Certainly what one would call psychedelic rock. Expect rich full sound and dark atmospheric ambiance. And volume, yes, these guys like it loud!

As always, First Stop Friday is FREE an all ages are welcome! Doors are at 6:30 PM and music usually starts around 7PM. Tell your friends!

April First Stop Friday Recap

Before I tell you all about the super busy, super awesome month we've had here at the FPL, I want to deliver some sad news. Spitting Nickels experienced the loss of their keyboardist Ben Borowiak on March 28th. My thoughts go out to Ben's family, friends and bandmates. Their show here was one of our first and they're forever in the First Stop Friday family. A benefit for Ben's family will be held on May 7th. Details here.

The library's been a hopping place this last month what with our Ferndale Reads festivities. On March 29th, we had a visit from best-selling author (and the library's new best friend ;) ) John Connolly. John not only regaled us with stories about his life and writing, but he was also kind enough to sign everyone's books and give each a good chunk of his time. A lucky few of us got to hang out with him afterward at the WAB, and though my alcohol-processing enzymes will be low for quite some time, it was an experience I will never forget. To bring it back to music, John hosts a weekly radio show called ABC to XTC that you can listen to here. I'll even do the math for you: Tuesdays at 10:00 AM GMT (that's 5:00 AM EST) and rerun on Saturdays at 21:00 GMT (that's 4:00 PM EST).

As if hanging out with an author wasn't enough, we also had our best-attended First Stop Friday concert to date. Jura and Oblisk rocked the house so much that people had to sit on the floor! Thank you guys for playing! Pictures below!

First Stop Friday: Oblisk and Jura

First Stop Friday is rolling again! March's show was a big success and it looks like April's is going to be a record-setting event. As of five minutes ago, the Facebook event showed that 48(!) people have said yes and 50 (!) have said maybe. I can't wait. Here's a little about the bands who will blow your mind on April 1st.

Jura
With its driving rhythms and soft compelling vocals, Jura creates chiming shoegaze that will draw you in. Their debut self-titled album came out last year on Forget Records and was described by our very own Jeff Milo as "Meditative and dreamy; packed with shimmering guitars, buzzing drawls and humming cosmic quarries of rounding delicate roars" in his Real Detroit review. Jura is the voice/guitar of Martin Starman and the guitar/percussion of former Asha Vida member Eric Pieti. In 2008 Jura added Frank Lee, drummer for demonic kraut rock band, Red China. Frank can also be seen giving high-fives to people at The Natural Food Patch.

Oblisk
Neo-psychedelic area favorites, Oblisk create shifting walls of sound and propulsive trip-hop. Deep Ian Curtis-esque vocals by Asim Akhtar are a perfect match for the chugging ambience they create. Weather Patterns, their latest album, out on Candy Colored Dragon, was called "Heavy, dynamic, fuzzy, and often incomprehensible, Weather Patterns is perfect for drifting off and becoming lost in the music. An example of shoegaze at its best, Oblisk creates a deep grove, distorted ambient background, and powerful vocals able to lull the listener into a sense of serenity with intermittent urges to dance" by Detroit Underground. There has been a promise that "projections w/ live video mixing will be in effect," so come prepared for an aural and visual spectacular.

What a triumphant returm for First Stop Friday at the FPL! Amazing psychedelic sounds and visuals from The Electric Lamp Rays and an energetic, raucous set from Sheefy McFly and the Delorean. I could not have been more pleased with the performances, turn-out, or the excitement level. At one point, I looked around and said to myself, "I'm totally running a venue here!" Thank you, members of the bands for being awesome and to all my regular attendees.

The Ferndale Library is back in action. Neither Snowmaggedon nor Federal holiday could keep us down on Monday and we opened our doors and arms wide to Ferndale once again. Over the past few days I've witnessed patrons taking their stacks of ten CDs (that's the max we allow out at once) up to the circ desk. As the purchaser of music at the FPL, this warms my heart. I've been ordering new things like a madwoman, so expect to see lots of new musical treasures. If something you want is checked out, don't forget that you can place our CDs on hold through our online catalog.

A Ferndale Patch article by Deleano Acevedo about the local music collection went up this week. Deleano makes me and my project sound amazing. Plus the pictures are pretty good too!

Tomorrow, The Ferndale Fine Arts Boosters are having an Irish themed fundraiser for musical instruments, instrument repairs and other things Ferndale Schools need to keep music and other fine arts education alive in Ferndale.

The FPLs annual community read program is starting out it's month of programming next Thursday with The Crooked Man's Open Mic Night. Read, sing or perform your work at the library! All of the events are centered around The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly, so come and pick up your copy of the book for free at the library! Also, check out the library's Youtube channel for some comedic reinterpretations of fairy tales the staff has worked on in anticipation for Ferndale Reads.

Next Friday, First Stop Fridays are back! Sheefy McFly and the Delorean and The Electric Lamp Rays will perform. Doors are at 6:30 PM Music begins at 7.

Blowout is next week too! Four nights of running around Hamtramck's bars, halls and dives and sampling the best Detroit's music scene has to offer. It is my goal to put up my Blowout picks early next week, so if you don't see anything by Tuesday, write me a comment! Take a look at the schedule.

First Stop Friday is BACK!

Things are moving again. Slowly, but there's progress. As the library awaits new carpet and the finishing touches that it needs to reopen, we've all been planning big things for March. First Stop Friday concerts will start back up in March! I'm pleased to say that Sheefy McFly and the Delorean and The Electric Lamp Rays will be kicking us back into gear! Both of these bands have a library connection. Sheefy McFly played the FPL's first stand-alone music event at the library back in May 2010. I can't wait to see him and the Delorean do their thing in our much bigger space! The Electric Lamp Rays' keyboard player is a longtime library employee at the Royal Oak and Berkley public libraries. I was fortunate enough to share some desk time with him at RO and when I mentioned my concert series (and SMatD) he was excited to join in the fun!

Ah Mittenfest! Exhauster of the Mighty, Entertainer of the Many and Raiser of the Funds. This year's Michigan music extravaganza raised $15,000 for 826 Michigan, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

This year I only went one night. Don't feel sorry for my old, sick carcass, though, as I did see Matt Jones & the Reconstruction, The Sights, Jesse Shepherd-Bates, The Juliets, Charles Trees, Fields of Industry and This is Deer Country in one night. I tested out my new video camera and captured the historic cover of "Born to Run" by Matt Jones and the Reconstruction. I learned a valuable lesson about small, cheap microphones and proximity. Also, be sure to watch it in HD. I didn't beg for this camera for nothing!

Lifetime Metro-Detroiter that I am, I've never seen The Sights live. Figures I would see them play in Ypsilanti. But still. Their energy blew me away. The Juliets' drummer is badass. Also, a fun surprise was Jesse Shepherd-Bates' set. The Satin Peaches were supposed to play, but not all of them could be there, so what we got was a unique JSB set that was full of rocking. Another surprise for me was This is Deer Country. I've seen them before, and I'm a fan, but what I saw that night was otherworldly. Those guys have EVOLVED. Kate's voice has matured and she's been working on her technique. Plus with a full band they just shine. I highly recommend their new album What Wandering Heart. Seriously, it's beautiful and VERY well-produced.

Christmas Time is Here Again

Well folks, it's almost here. If you're anything like me, the lead-up to Christmas has been stressful and busy. So why not use your time off (if you have some) to see some live music. The first show I'd suggest is Sounds & Spirits at the Magic Stick. The proceeds benefit C.O.T.S. which helps alleviate homelessness in the Detroit area. Interesting things always happen when you mix holiday music and rock bands, so come out for a fun time!

Mittenfest has always been a source for fun, photos, reunions and exhaustion for me. Now in its fifth year, this event is becoming a go-to for great music from the Ypsi/Ann Arbor scene and beyond. The four-day extravaganza of music, booze and friends benefits 826 Michigan which supports students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and helps teachers inspire their students to write.

This will probably not be news to most of you, but the Ferndale Public Library will be closed for awhile. Well, awhile doesn't really cover it. Ten weeks is the current estimate. This means a lot of things, including the cancellation of all programming for the duration of the closure. So First Stop Fridays are on hiatus. The good news (little of it that there is) is that the collection (books, movies, music, periodicals and audiobooks) remains undamaged. This means that when we see your smiling faces at the library again, we'll have everything you expect from us, and probably more. I'm now going to attempt to assemble my favorite albums of the year. This is always hard for me, as it's difficult for me to track what excited me 12 minutes ago let alone 12 months ago. But here's the list, such as it is.

Kelly's 780.00s Best of the Year List in no particular order

1. Glasser - Ring

I'm certainly not the only one who would put this at the top of their list, but I did love it before NPR's All Songs Considered got to it. Cameron Mesirow's powerful voice yelps and croons equally well on this album. The electronic, but not robotic music is so beautifully orchestrated that you'll definitely want headphones for this one. "Apply" is my favorite, with its dark tribal feel and otherworldly vocals.

2. Emeralds - Does it Look Like I'm Here?

This is perfect work music for me. Spacey, lyric-less, hypnotic. It keeps you engaged just enough to let your mind go places it wouldn't ordinarily. Listening to "Candy Shoppe" while otherwise occupied and then again when giving it your full attention are two vastly different experiences. A large part of the appeal for me is that this sounds an awful lot like Final Fantasy music.

3. The Title Tracks - It Was Easy

In a lot of ways, this album is the opposite of the first two on this list. Power pop. Guitars. Male vocalist. This stuff is seriously fun, and well done. Ringing guitars and ooooh ooooh ooooh harmonies. I played the crap out of this album in February and March when it was released. "Found Out" feels like your favorite '60s song. Listen Here

4. Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record

Embarrassing as it is to admit, I really had never heard any Broken Social Scene before this record. That's why Forgiveness Rock Record was such a lovely surprise for me. And it gave me another reason to be thankful for being the music selector at the FPL. It creates these amazing moods, and my favorite, "Meet Me In the Basement," makes me well up with joy every time I hear it.

5. Drunken Barn Dance - Grey Buried

Though I'm not the oldest DBD fan around, I know enough to feel weird calling this their debut album. I've heard these songs so many times, and in so many different states of mind (and, appropriately, drunkenness) that it seems strange for this to be the first time hearing some of them properly recorded. But it is a wonderful thing. Nothing compares to screaming the lyrics of "The Last Desperate Stand of the Last Fair Man" back at Scott and company while your arms are draped over your best friends' shoulders, but having a recorded version of it ready for reminiscing purposes is a lovely thing.

6. LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening

James Murphy came back with a vengeance this year with This Is Happening. There's lots to love on this album. "Drunk Girls" is clearly the hit, with its hyperactively delivered truths about the titular group of ladies. My favorite is "One Touch" which is kind of spooky; building intensity till Murphy starts in with robotic vocals. Even the kids screaming "One Touch" are creepy.

7. Sleigh Bells - Treats
This group is a study in contrast. Heavy guitars, crunchy sounds, and lightning bolts set the stage for a high-pitched, autotuned female voice. It works, though, and it feels like some sort of anthem. I can picture kids of some post-apocalyptic future riding around in tricked-out tanks blaring "Tell 'Em" out the window.

8. Vampire Weekend - Contra

I debated including this in my list, because there are some things I don't like about this record. However, there's a lot I do like. The calypso rhythms, clever, quickly delivered lyrics, the drums. And one could do worse than be constantly compared to Paul Simon. My favorite track is "White Sky" for that burst of joy I like to talk about. Those falsetto "aaaaooooh"s never fail to make me smile, and God help me, sing along.

9. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Jr. - Horse Power

I positively swelled with pride when I heard these guys played on All Songs Considered earlier this year, even if Bob Boilen recommended they ditch their name. When you see two guys take the stage in racing jumpsuits and straw hats, you really have no idea what kind of music you're going to hear. I certainly didn't expect the sweet, electronic backed, harmony filled tunes they turned out, but I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone seems to be digging on "Vocal Chords" but I think my favorite is their cover of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows".

10. My Chemical Romance - Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys

Am I a little embarrassed? Yeah. Does it keep me from being excited about seeing them live. No. My Chemical Romance, though a favorite of sunken-chested teens everywhere, knows how to create fun, emotional music. Most of all, they know how to make an album. Danger Days is another themed LP, but this time they run screaming from emo toward something that sounds a lot more like punk, and I like it. This is supposed to be the group's last, so, if you jump on the bandwagon now, the trip will be short.

A good turnout for two great bands. The Mantons played their brand of folk rock interspersed with stories about their songs. Spitting Nickels rocked it with a really fun set and a sweet Hammond/Moog set-up. Many thanks to both bands for playing. Here's some pictures!

Michigan Library Association Conference

As some of you know, I presented on the local music collection/project at this year's MLA conference. The presentation went very well, attendance was great, especially considering that there were six other presentations going on at the same time. There were lots of great questions and suggestions and I met some great librarians doing good work at their libraries. I found the whole conference to be a fruitful experience. Thanks MLA for giving a person like me a shot!

Darling Imperial "Takotsubo" release party

Talking about local music all week got me excited to see some. Macramé Tiger, The Beggars and Darling Imperial played The Berkley Front on Saturday to celebrate the release of Darling Imperial's Takotsubo EP. The Front has a marvelous beer selection as well as an interesting performance space upstairs. It does get a tad warm up there, as the sweaty pictures below will show you. Macramé Tiger sets are always fun, especially when they all switch instruments. The Beggars were a blast, as always, and always provide me with lots of great photo ops. Darling Imperial laid down some good, tight rock, with killer vocals by Sarah Sadovsky.

Bridges and Powerlines, Pewter Cub, Old Empire

Bridges and Powerlines, a band I work with for my other job at Green Light Go Publicity was in town from New York, so I thought it'd be fun to check them out. It was especially fun because Pewter Cub, a band that holds a special place in my heart was also on the bill. B&P have a fun, poppy sound, and had great harmonies. I bailed before Old Empire, but will have to make plans to see them again.

It's that time again...time for adults to dress up and act like fools. Oh yeah, and for kids to trick-or-treat. I'm here to talk about a little of both.

Tomorrow night, come to the library from 6:30 - 8:30 PM for our annual Halloween party! There's a costume contest for kids and adults, trick or treating, a fortune teller, goodies and a free performance by improv group The Brainstormers. Please bring a non-perishable food item. All items will go to the Zion Lutheran Food Bank.

First Stop Friday October: Recaps and Pictures

What can I say? This month's First Stop Friday was a huge success, with amazing sets by both The Bell Beat and Timothy Monger State Park. The Sh! Mob, the projected images and messages posted by audience members, was ridiculously fun, and I totally wish I had thought of it. The last minute goodie bags filled with a 90s CD, bouncy eyball, silly bandz and Mentos seemed to go over well. The audience was LARGE, and that's not just by library standards. I narrowly avoided crying when giving my final thank yous, mostly due to my intense fear of embarrassment, but I'll tell you, it was a close one.

DIY Street Fair starts tonight. Are you going? It's going to be great! I do sympathize for Troy Street residents (my street IS Dally in the Alley), but I can't help but love this festival. Tonight, you get to start off the night with The Bell Beat, who you will recognize as future participants in my next First Stop Friday, so you know they're going to be good. The Satin Peaches are a blast to watch. Augie and Korin must have something up their sleeves for an event in the center of their neighborhood. Outrageous Cherry are a good ol' blast from the past and I won't feel like a Detroiter till I see Goober and the Peas tonight. Please also see FUR, the nicest band on earth, and a great psych-, fuzz, electro-rock group.

Saturday...well, I haven't even looked that far ahead...stop in the library during the day, visit me, check out our building, get a card (DL or State ID with your FERNDALE address on it), check out the music, movies and books we have for you. We're right in the center of it all, so why not check us out. Plus our Friends group will be having a used book sale on the lawn.

First Stop Fridays: Timothy Monger State Park and The Bell Beat

Before I get to the sweet pictures and sweet rundown of how the first First Stop Friday went, let me tell you about the next one. Friday, October 1st, the Ferndale Public Library welcomes Timothy Monger State Park and The Bell Beat (formerly Sh! The Octopus) to the First Stop Friday club. You may recognize Timothy as one of the guys from Great Lakes Myth Society. This is his poppier solo project that has developed into a full band. Expect great storytelling and beautiful music played by some of the best Ann Arbor/Ypsi has to offer.
The Bell Beat play folk-tinged pop with layered background vocals and driving guitar. Randy Bishop's lyrics will have you thinking long after you've moved on to the next venue.

I think anyone here for one band would enjoy the other, so plan on staying a couple hours. Let me know if you're coming on Facebook.

Now, last week at The Ferndale Public Library was a first. The first time a music-only event happened in our gorgeous new building. The boringly-named Multipurpose Room inexplicably has great acoustics, so both the quieter, string-based Forget and the darker, heavier Pewter Cub sounded equally amazing. Pewter Cub opened with their heavier take on shoegaze, with Regan's great moody voice. Forget was a surprise, because they're always a surprise. Their lineup rotates and this time it was a strange long stringed instrument, drums, slide guitar, viola, violin and bass. Their improvised set consisted of two wandering "songs" that were rhythmic, chill, yet attention keeping.

Fucking Awesome Fest: Saturday + Recap

Naming something "Fucking Awesome" really sets the thing up on a pedestal. I'm going to have to say that this year's fest was merely awesome. I saw a few things that were fantastic. Marco Polio was, as always, tremendously entertaining. The Satin Peaches are a sight and sound to behold, The Friendly Foes put on a really fun and (sadly) final show. The Screaming Females. I don't even know what to say. Marissa Paternoster is one of the most dynamic performers I've ever seen. I felt compelled, pulled toward the stage just to see her sing and wail on that guitar. Amazing. The Hounds Below do dark rockabilly just right. FAWN are great, I really need to download some of their songs so I can actually hear what they're saying. Illy Mack covered Madonna's "Like A Prayer" and for that I love them. Millions of Brazilians now has Augie. And they played their show on the floor in front of the stage. Therefore none of my pictures came out. Oh well, they blew my face off, so that's good.

After a week away, part of which I spent in Yellowstone National Park, I'm refreshed and ready to lay some local music and library news on you. As you may have heard, I'm starting a monthly showcase for local bands at the library. First Stop Fridays will be held at the Ferndale Public Library (222 E. Nine Mile Road) from 6:30-8:30 PM the first Friday of each month. Start your weekend out right with a free show in our beautiful new building. Hey Local Bands! Play the Ferndale Public Library!

So yeah, I started handing these out, and Jeff Milo posted it over at his new FPL blog, The Ferndale Public Library Observer. It's official: I'm planning a monthly local music showcase at the library. Those of you who attended our preview party know that the sound in the Multipurpose Room was pretty impressive. Well, that's where this biz will occur. A Friday per month (still deciding which one) after library hours (6:30 - 8:30 PM) the library will turn into a music venue, with a difference. Enjoy local bands in a new and different kind of place. It's not a bar or club or meat market. It's YOUR library. Where you go to discover new things.

You Came, You Saw, You Rocked Out

My feet still aren't touching the earth. That's because the Library's Community Preview Party was such a success. Especially the music portion. From Pete Peltier and Paul Gaughan's sweet acoustic renditions of classic rock songs to The School of Rock's amazing energy and talent to The MyDols' super fun, punky set for kids to The Pop Project's great harmonies and witty lyrics to The High Strung's quirky set perfect for a library, the music was great. This is a personal thank you from me to all of the musicians who worked with a library for the first or 200th(!) time.

Let me get some (more) gushing out of the way. Having The Pop Project and The High Strung in my library at my "request" was a dream come true. Maybe that's cheesy, but I don't care. The Pop Project were one of the first local bands I really got into. In fact, I can remember driving home from a show with my best friend, working out the words to "Hearts and Flowers". It was the first time we'd ever heard it. How's that for catchy? As for The High Strung, as soon as I heard the This American Life about these guys playing public libraries all over the state (and later the country), I began dreaming of having them play my library.

Saturday's shindig had been a source of stress for me for at least two months. It's just in my nature to worry. And believe me, as time went on, there was plenty to worry about. Frankly, the only thing I didn't worry about was the music. As the day got closer, people from all directions came together to make our party happen, no matter what, and it was this solidarity that finally calmed (as much as this is possible, I mean, think who we're talking about, here) me down.

The day's music started shortly after a lovely dedication ceremony with Pete Peltier and Paul Gaughan. They played classic rock tunes expertly to a quickly growing, very diverse audience in our Multipurpose Room.

A word about our Multipurpose Room. First, the space is gorgeous. It looks out onto Nine Mile, but everything is so well-insulated that you only hear the loudest of trucks as they pass. Secondly, the design includes a very high ceiling with plexiglass way up high. This seemed (though I think I'll have to consult one of the acoustic design books I bought with The Dance Grant) to channel the sound in the room in all the right directions. The bottom line here is that I am really psyched about bringing musicians of all sorts into this space.

After a short break, The School of Rock house band filed in and began setting up. At first glance, your average library attendee might have been puzzled by the age of the musicians. But after a few minutes, I don't think anyone noticed that the kids playing Zeppelin, The Who and Beck weren't old enough to drive. These kids really ROCK. And with a teacher like Troy Gregory, it's no surprise.

Now the tricky part. Moving the PA from the Multipurpose Room to the Children's Library. Successfully executed. The MyDols engaged and involved the kids and parents in the kids area. I had people of all ages tell me how much they enjoyed the set.

The programmed lull here had me worried a bit. See, when the party was a Grand Opening, this is where the library would have been closed for services. But since things had changed, we'd decided to keep the whole place open the whole time. Dinner time can be a bit dodgy for shows, so the worry-o-meter was running a bit high. Soon, though, as a whole new crowd began to come in, I relaxed, and finally took off my debilitating shoes, and enjoyed the music and the company of friends, colleagues, and fellow library supporters.

The Pop Project played a fantastic set filled with their classics and a bunch of new songs that I wish I had a good enough memory (or have had the sense to record the show) to remember them all. I can vaguely describe a mostly acoustic song built around a sound. I mean, I guess I just did. It was all harmony and beauty and everything I love about this band. An older woman, who apparently remembers the 60s and 70s said to me as she left with her grandchild, "They're great! Reminds me of listening to Hendrix and the Beatles". I mean. That's pretty great, right? Kids really liked dancing to The Pop Project and their parents thought this band was awesome.

The High Strung are library veterans. They've played some 200 library shows. They really know how to play a diverse audience. Everyone around me enjoyed their crazy, fun, quirky set. My dad and oldest brother included. I only wish we had dispensed with the chairs and encouraged more dancing. Because I think some groovin' would have broken out. Lesson learned. Less chairs.

So here's the deal. Saturday's party is still on. Everyone is still playing. There will still be free food. However, due to some technical issues that are out of our control, we will not be doing library business on Saturday, July 10th and we will not be opening the doors on Monday. We want it to be just right for our patrons and it's just not possible...yet. Rest assured that when we do fling open the doors and welcome you all in, it will be with confidence in our beautiful, full-service facility.

A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' on!

Let's get started with the thing I'm most excited about. The Grand Opening Party! This is the biggest party we've ever planned and with the most music! Come check out Pete Peltier & Paul Gaughan, The MyDols, The School of Rock, The Pop Project and The High Strung throughout the day at the new and improved Ferndale Public Library! The whole thing is FREE (as it should be) and we want to see tons of people there, so tell a friend!

So on to my weekend, because for the first time in a long time, I had one. I had planned to spend Saturday evening and night at the New Center Park, which is lovely and a 3 minute bus ride from my apartment, for the free music going on there. I arrived with enough time to schmooze with lots of great people from Loco Gnosis Records, The Beggars, Pewter Cub and The Spitting Nickels. I only mention this because it means more local music in the library for YOU, dear reader. I saw Macrame Tiger's set and I thought it was a blast. Really fun, and perfect for the hot summer day and the venue. I will definitely see them again.

It was during the break between Macrame Tiger and Woodman that I started to use my handy HTC Incredible to play Facebook (I'm assuming you don't need a link) detective. See, I'd heard that a "GLMS Tribute Band" were lined up to play at the Savoy, which is newly run by none other than Andy Garris. This is intriguing, but perhaps not enough to make a girl leave the comfort of a grassy hill...unless someone plants the idea in her head that it's actually Great Lakes Myth Society playing under the name The Pussy Hummingbears. After some snooping, I decided that the evidence was such that it merited a 40 minute drive to Ypsilanti for more investigation.

I am so happy I went! GLMS were playing in their "civilian" clothes and calling themselves by that ridiculous name because they were technically practicing for their gig the next day. The result was an intimate audience, a fun (and funny) set and plenty of time to talk to everyone afterwards. Hearing them play "Nights in White Satin", something that probably wouldn't have gone on as long as it did in a "normal" gig, was awesome. Too bad my camera freaked out, or I could share it with you. I also scored a (nearly) one of a kind Pussy Hummingbears t-shirt complete with "bear" autographs. Brilliant.

Chris Bathgate also played a set which, due to the layout of the Savoy and the number of people I was interested in talking to, I missed most of. He did close with his cover of "Across the Universe" and it was beautiful. I hope this ends up on an EP, or some special edition thingie.

You may or may not have heard, but The Elbow Room of Ypsilanti closed its doors for good this past weekend. But not without a bang. Saturday night, I was lucky enough to catch the last show at the Elbow, and boy was it a good one. As word spread that the rumors were indeed sad but true, people seemed to need to celebrate. Outlandish tips were given, sparklers appeared and towers of shots were handed out. This atmosphere is the direct result of the Elbow's proprietor, Andy Garris and the staff. They created a place that was about friends, music and good service, and for that I am grateful. Believe me, I would not drive 45 minutes to go to a bar I didn't like. Before I get to my very, very belated review of the Human Reunion "Carbonics" release, please look at this foolishness.

Note the use of public domain music there at the end. It's funny and all, but if you've got some music that is your own that you'd like us to use in our silly library videos, drop me a line at k.d.bennett79 [at] gmail [dot] com. It'd be a great way to marry the library and local music...and then there'd be nerdy music babies. Or something. I'm working on like five hours sleep here.

So, yeah. The Carbonics release show was great. Lettercamp opened, and I gotta say, I was totally riveted. Liz Wittman's sexy delivery (both in front of and behind that super cool back lit screen), the bass-heavy pop music behind her and the whole vibe the band has leads me to create a new genre name for them: dark dance pop. If it's not already taken, that is.

Next up was Human Reunion. I saw them the last time Five Three Dial Tone had a release and back then, if I'm being honest, I wasn't that into it. But this time, I loved it. It was fun. It was punk. They have a song called "Dog Bowls". HR are great to watch and to hear. Buy their super special record (and download the mp3s) here.

Loyal library users Silverghost played next. Their sets are always fun, but this one was especially lively. The interaction between Marcie and Deleano is the frosting on a spacey, hooky, dancey cake.

Last but certainly not least, Deastro took the stage. What to say? The full band version of Deastro broke up awhile ago, but reunited for this show. Everyone present was more than excited to be there for this fateful night. Honestly, a lot has changed since I saw them last, so this performance was bittersweet for me. It was a great set, full of everything you've come to love from Deastro, with the added bonus (?) of some punk rockness provided by Randy Chabot's bleeding forehead.

Tonight, Five Three Dial Tone Records celebrates the release of their latest release, "Carbonics" by Human Reunion. I'll be there, so you should be, too.

Before I get to the show review, look at me on Youtube! This is the beginning of a series of behind the scenes library videos called "In the Stacks".

Why is it that when I'm taking pictures of a band, I have less of a sense of how they sound? Thankfully, for me, I stopped snapping part way through both Pewter Cub and Rogue Satellites' sets to enjoy them. Pewter Cub's set was really good last night, all moody and cool. If you know me, you know that it takes a hell of a female vocalist to impress me, so when I say that I loved Regan Lorie's dark, haunting voice, you know that's saying something. Scott Sanford's bass and guitar playing are impressive; his fingers fly over the bass just as quickly as on the guitar. Dave Jennings on drums smashes out the heartbeat of their powerful songs. Look for their record soon, after what I heard last night, it's sure to be great.

Rogue Satellites were celebrating the release of their record Fallacy Island last night. I hadn't seen them in over a year, so it was really cool to see how they've changed since then. They are totally dancable, and fun. Combining electro beats with the unstoppable force that is Scott Stone's drumming gives their songs the feel of racing train that you don't want to get off of. Jaye Thomas' vocals are sweet in their delivery, belying the darker nature of some of the lyrics ("Imaginary Animals"). I love this kind of thing. Regan Lorie is also a Satellite, and her keys and backup vocals really polish the band's sound. Their record, recorded and mixed by Jim Diamond is out now. I'm listening to it right now, and I'm really digging it!

Highlight of the night: when Pewter Cub's Scott and Dave joined Rogue Satellites on stage to become Rogue Cubs and Pewter Satellites for a few songs.

Sadly, I only heard a few of Fur's songs because I'm an old lady and needed to get home to bed. They sounded really tight. I will have to see them again.

I went to the Majestic Theatre Complex so many times this weekend that I really expect them to set up a cot for me. The Alley Deck seems like a good place to sleep, right?

Friday night, I caught some of the Heidelberg Rock Project. The highlight for me was Marco Polio and the New Vaccines vs. Black Lodge, a free-for-all of balloons, honey, feathers, yarn and dancing. Yeah, I said honey.

Saturday, I came back to the Stick for Midlake. I was sad that the turnout was so small for such a beautiful band, but happy that I was able to be close enough to take some pictures.

Sunday, I went to the Cafe for Fan-Tan, a synth-pop band in from New York, a client for Green Light Go (my other job). They were really good, and super nice people.

I'm currently sitting in the mostly uninhabited Ferndale Library temporary location, where my co-workers and I are readying our collection and ourselves for our big move. Trust me, it's going to be worth the wait.

Library Chainsaw Massacre?

Sorry for the tardiness of this post, but I spent most of the day at the Metro Detroit Book and Author Society's Award Lunch, who were kind enough to award the library the James Dance Grant so that I can create a snazzy collection of instructional books for our lovely group of local musicans. Again please send me any recommendations you might have for this sort of thing.

Last Saturday saw a one of a kind event at the Ferndale Public Library. The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre's Bryan Metro previewed his novel, The Invisible People and he was accompanied by music composed to go along with it by the rest of JCM. Sheefy McFly, an up-and-coming rapper brought his brand of down to earth rap to the mix, for the sort of event a library doesn't see too often. It was wild, it was crazy, there was flailing, there was swearing and there were people here enjoying every minute of it. My thanks to The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre for taking the initiative and using a chance meeting at Blowout to form a real connection with me. To quote someone on Twitter, "It happened and it was FANTASTIC."

Remember a few months back when I asked what kinds of books you all would like to see in a music instruction collection? Remember how none of you responded? Yeah well, I got the grant! And now I get to be in control of what's in the collection! MWAHAHAHAHHAHA!

I'm kidding. But not about getting the grant. This coming Monday, I will be accepting, on behalf of the Ferndale Public Library, of course, a $2000 check from the Metro Detroit Book and Author Society to be used to purchase materials for a music instruction collection. I plan to include books on how to play instruments (guitar and much, much more); how to use things like Pro-Tools and Abelton; guides to acoustics; legal books on the music business, and more! If you do have any suggestions of things you'd like to see in this collection, please send me an email, call or drop by.

This is, by the way, an effort to give back to the many local musicians who have donated their CDs to our collection, those who have played our events for free, and those who play every weekend and give me and many others great joy.

BTW. In case you haven't heard, the library will close its temporary location at 5:30 PM on MAY 21st. We'll be closed for at least a month. Keep checking this space, and our website: http://www.ferndale.lib.mi.us for reopening dates. We'll be here (and there) working hard to make that first day we reopen PERFECT.

The Blind Pig - Antlers • Phantogram

The little bit that I've listened to of Antlers' Hospice I love. Many simple elements coming together in a way that is both bigger than those parts and never lets you forget where they all came from. I bet it'll be a beautiful process to see live.

I really like Phantogram's Eyelid Movies (CD-1869 at the FPL), good and trippy, it's the kind of music that keeps you typing, running or working. Also, the vocals on "Running From the Cops" remind me of one of the scariest movies I've ever seen: Session 9.

The Magic Bag - The Hard Lessons • Fawn • The Octopus
Talk about a Ferndale show! You know the Hard Lessons are going to rock your face off. What you might not know is that FAWN will whip you up into a pop stupor and The Octopus will kick your ass with some straight up rock, and forget the feminine touch, because front woman Masha Marjieh isn't playing that game.

The Hounds Below return to Detroit! In the Cafe, it's going to blow you away. Seriously, see this band, and get there early, because that joint is small and it's going to be crowded.

I went to two shows last week, so you know what that means...PIC SPAM!

First, a few words about each.

On Wednesday, I went to see Leopold and His Fiction. I was super impressed! Their song "Golden Friends" is amazing and moody and sounds just as good live as it does here. Each of their three members has wonderful stage presence, so their show was engaging to watch as well as hear.

I bailed before Black Lodge took the stage...so I'll have to catch them soon.

Saturday I went to see a show at the Elbow Room, which is famous for birthday shows for people. This one featured Chris Bathgate, Greg McIntosh, Tim Monger and Drunken Barn Dance. It felt like everyone's birthday!

I'm going to this tonight. I'm anxious to see if Black Lodge can slay me again, the way that they did at Blowout. I'm also interested in Leopold and His Fiction. They do this kind of dark, intense, crooner thing, and it's pretty intriguing.

It's full disclosure time, folks. I've got a second job. I'm working part time at Green Light Go Publicity right here in Ferndale. It's music publicity. I don't doubt that I'm going to be exposed to a LOT more bands, which is good for everyone, right? Rest assured that this space will still be dedicated to (mostly) local music, shows I go to, and most importantly, the library and the community of Ferndale. You'll still see the things here that you always have, so don't worry!

Something spectacular has happened. Kommie Kilpatrick and Champions of Breakfast are putting out a split cassette with five Champions of Breakfast songs covered by Kommie Kilpatrick and five Kommie Kilpatrick songs covered by Champions of Breakfast. And tomorrow night, they'll be selling the 50 copies they have and (I presume) playing these songs. Be there.

For awhile now, I've been pumping our CD collection with goodies. Here's some recent additions I think you'll dig!

Astro Coast - Surfer Blood (CD-1878)

Not surprisingly, this is surf rock. There's ringing guitars, a nearly punk delivery of the lyrics and a pleasant 80s feel to this record. It's one of those albums that you can either have on in the background, or listen to intently, with about equal enjoyability.

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes (CD-1876)

Apologies for living under a rock for so long. This album is quite simply, gorgeous. Harmonies that pierce your heart. There's this sense of "biggness" that makes me feel like I'm hearing it in a cathedral where I'm the only other one present.

Electric Ladyland- The Jimi Hendrix Experience (CD-1872)

This remastered classic comes with a DVD, but the real jewel has always been the recording. "Crosstown Traffic," Voodoo Chile" and "All Along the Watchtower" sound amazing remastered. It's the kind of thing you should listen to with someone who heard it the first time in 1968, so you can hear their tales of disbelief and astonishment.

I feel like I'm always apologizing for lateness here, so this time I'm not going to.

Last Saturday, I saw Tim Monger and Lac La Belle at the Lager House. Tim's always a delight to see, and the fairly new band he's assembled fleshes out his beautiful songs in ways you didn't know you were missing. He covered a Big Star song in memory of Alex Chilton. I caught it on video, and will upload it soon if the sound is decent.

I really liked Lac La Belle. Jennie Knaggs has a fantastic and powerful voice that, when combined with mandolin, double bass and guitar makes for a gorgeous bluegrass sound.

After a much needed break, I'm back! Let's see what's going on around town this week.

This Thursday is another Science Rocks event at the Detroit Science Center. Another Science Rocks event that I can't go to. :(

That, won't however, keep me from telling you to go! First of all, the lineup is amazing. Electric Firebabies, Darling Imperial, Prime Ministers and Silverghost. Secondly, SCIENCE. I love science and anything that gets people excited about it makes me happy. Go get there early and explore all the great stuff the Detroit Science Center has to offer, eat some astronaut ice cream and then rock out to some of the best bands in the area!

I am going to this on Saturday. I love Tim Monger's solo stuff, and even more so with a full band (trumpet!). I had been meaning to see Old Empire and Lac La Belle during Blowout, but we know how that worked out. So, I think this will be a good way to spend your Saturday night. Plus, the Arctic Cafe (will the name change in spring?) behind the Lager House has some kick-ass food. The burgers are awesome. I dare you to order a game hen!

Ah yes. That old familiar feeling. Exhausted, headachey, and totally over Blowout...till next year.

Highlights

*Lightning Love covering Wheetus' "Teenage Dirtbag". Though this would have been a bigger highlight if I had actually got video of it, like I thought I was. Oh well, it would have been ruined by me singing along anyway.

*Looking behind me during SOYSV's set and seeing tons of people.

*Child Bite describing Secret Twins as "50% beautiful and 50% handsome".

*The confetti, streamers and craziness of Millions of Brazilians. Oh yeah and being on stage.

*Talking to no less than 6 "library people"! We're hip people, I swear!

Saturday was my night to hang out and see what The Gates of Columbus (complex?) had to offer. I caught some of Secret Twins' set. I really like them. Dina can really sing! And they always sound bigger than their two members.

Next was Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor. The room really filled up for their excellent psychedelic set. There were four or five cameras turned on them at all times. That may have a little to do with the fact that they were the only band I saw that has an old style oil and food coloring light show. I'm really pleased that people like these guys. It's not for nothing; they rock.

After this, I saw Child Bite. They never fail in the energy department. This time, someone came tromping through the audience with a parachute that everyone grabbed an edge of and began flapping it in the air. It was like gym class. Child Bite has survived the loss/replacement of two members, and while I'll miss those guys, I like that the band still exists.

Lightning Love gets so much deserved good press that I would not be surprised if they got a national record deal out of it. They win for having songs you can sing along to almost immediately, and for knowing that a cover of "Teenage Dirtbag" is not too dorky and is the absolute perfect way to end a set.

After that, shmoozing occurred. I was aware that The Cold Wave and Silverghost were playing, but I was kind of basking in the glory of finding a whole group of library folks hanging out at The Gates of Columbus.

Then it was Millions of Brazilians. I'd really only ever seen them about an eighth of a time, because of broken instruments. This set was basically the opposite of that one. Big stage, big sound, HUGE audience. I managed to get right up front, which is why my earplugs appear to have failed. This set was just a blast. Confetti, some guy with a huge streamer dispenser, leaf blowers and rock. Nick is a hell of a front man and it didn't take much for half the audience to want to join him. Unfortunately it was during this set that a female friend of mine got punched in the face by a dude. I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone that this is not cool.

Highlights

Blowout always has a day like this in store for me. The ambitious plan that's stymied by something. This time it was the desire to actually talk to the friends that had come out...and the tracking down of them. So, my "bands seen" count went down. No big deal. Let's talk about what did happen.

I saw Forget first. Maybe it was too early in the night for me, but this was kind of bizarre. The stage was packed with musicians and they were producing a wall of sound. I didn't stay long, so this really isn't a fair review, but I feel that I might enjoy it more at around 11:00 when people lose their inhibitions and get closer to the stage and more into it.

Next I tried to see The Juliets. And failed. I hear they were fantastic, as usual.

After that, I caught two songs from Randy Chabot's new project, SX-8 Columbia. There was a decided lack of sweet and sparkley in these tunes, which will take me a bit of time to get used to, but I think it could grow on me.

I finally met up with my friends at Paycheck's for Woodman. They play rock with a folk/Americana bent. It was a fun set to see, especially because Frank is clearly having such a great time.

After that, I turned my schedule over to the masses. Black Lodge at the Gates of Columbus Lounge.
I really wish I had a co-blogger who could help me with this. I know I loved it. I know that I want to see them again. I know that that bass was grooving. I know that watching Kyle McBee felt like watching a prophet. But I can't really tell you what it sounded like. I can tell you it felt like a party and a revival and a show I was glad to be at. Troy Gregory liked it.

With the night waning, I was certain I wanted to see something memorable. I chose Marco Polio and the New Vaccines. I've raved about them here before. They always make me feel like I'm part of something bigger, even if it's only for 35 minutes. I played drums with a few other members of the audience for like half the set. I was literally tied to everyone with red yarn. I was covered by a canopy of umbrellas. Every time I looked at the friend I was with he had this grin on his face, and I'm sure I did too.

And that was it. I have no idea what tonight will bring, but rest assured that I'll share it with you!

I came home with a t-shirt, a drumstick, yarn, glitter and a camera full of great pictures.

Black Lodge was phenomenal, and really saved what was becoming a night of driving instead of fun. Marco Polio makes you feel like living art.

Blowout Recap: Thursday

I think I set a personal record. Seven bands at six venues. That's Blowout.

Highlights:

*Watching other people, who hadn't seen him before, discover that Matt Jones is awesome.
*Happening to catch Rocky Loves Emily right when they telling the audience how much they loved Matt's set.
*Being hugged by Tim Monger.
*Having the decision to go see Black Irish pay off. Those guys are GREAT. If you're into blues.
*Talking to people I didn't know about music.

Last night was a good combination of the new and the familiar for me. I ran into quite a few people that I know, which is a pleasant (and quite new) feeling for me. Running from venue to venue by myself was more palatable, if I knew there was a chance that I'd see a familiar face there. Then there was the new. I had no idea that a band like Rocky Loves Emily existed in Detroit. Aren't we supposed to destroy their happiness before these kids get old enough to play guitars? It wasn't my style (kind of Blink-182 punk pop stuff), but it was good to see a bunch of kids play music and have fun. And hey, they might have a chance at the big time playing stuff that's really popular now.

Also new to me was Black Irish. Like nearly every other band in Detroit, this band is made up of people who are in other bands. Paul Barning (Hotness), plays a mean organ and oh what a voice. Elliott Moses (Universal Temple of the Divine Power) has this intensity when he sings and tears up that guitar. Shane Saunders' baby face masks a guitar demon. Tony Denardo (The Muggs) plays his unique basslines using a keyboard and Tony DiCello keeps the machine rolling with just as much attitude as the rest of the band. See these guys as soon as you can!

I really enjoyed FAWN's set. The new trio already has chemistry and they sound really together. Of course, they've all been in several bands already, so this isn't much of a surprise. I really liked their second to last song.

This is going to be a big month, especially for the library. This Saturday, we're having the Kick-Off party to a month of events surrounding the Maltese Falcon. There'll be a costume contest. Stop in the library for the code word to take to Mother Fletcher's and receive 50% off costume items!

I know it says live music over there, but it'll probably be olde tymey records instead, which is pretty cool, especially if it's your boss spinning them.

The Big Read is a big deal, y'all. There's a ton of book discussions, movie showings, panel discussions and don't forget that Loren Estleman will be speaking and signing on March 25th at Ferndale High School.

I figured I would write about tonight's show while the sweat was still damp and the memory was fresh. At the last minute, I decided to catch the Polysics/Marco Polio & The New Vaccines/Bad Party show. Sometimes it feels like things are meant to be. I couldn't have picked a more perfect weeknight show to risk my hearing at.

Bad Party, with attitude and plenty of feedback got the astonishingly young crowd going. People were dancing from the moment they got on stage.

Next, Marco Polio did what they do best: create an event. I hesitate to use the term "happening" because that feels old and trite, but it would be the best way to tell someone who wasn't there about it. Dancey, electronic music with a noise edge, Marco Polio is there to get you moving. But it's the performance that really sells the audience. Steve, the lead singer is off stage more often than on. And while he's off, he's literally connecting with the audience. Dancing with them, putting his arms around them, and tying them all together...with yarn. By the middle of their set, we were all prepared to do their bidding. When umbrellas were passed out, they weren't discarded or destroyed, they were opened to let a rain of glitter fall, and waved in the air to the music. During the last song, a bass drum was set on the floor and drumsticks handed out. People played, tried out rhythms, passed sticks to new people. In other words, they joined in. Which is why it didn't feel hokey, when we were all asked to put our hands together in a "go team" type cheer and holler "Six Million as One!". I was right in the middle of it, and I gotta say, this curmudgeon didn't even mind being almost crushed to death, if it meant being a part of this event.

Polysics, who hail from Tokyo, were a bigger draw than I thought they would be. Their brand of punk-on-Red Bull/dance does something to people. It makes them jump. fast. Seriously, these guys are amazing musicians and performers. They come out in matching orange jumpsuits and black strips across their eyes and scream and play and entertain. They want, more than anything for you to join in, be it singing, jumping, or jazz hands. I can only imagine that playing a small show in the US is totally different from the stadium shows they play in Japan, but there must be something they like about it, because they keep coming back to Detroit. Look for their CD at the library soon!

Hello loyal readers who aren't yet irritated by the fact that I almost never post on Monday anymore!

First, I finally saw a show again! Tim Monger/Flatfoot/The Hounds Below/Scarlet Oaks last Saturday.

This was the second time I saw Tim with a band (well, that wasn't GLMS) and I really like it. Especially the trumpet. It just seals the deal.

I'd never seen Flatfoot before. I really liked their genuine country sound. I liked it so much that I bought their latest CD for the library. Look for it soon.

I also hadn't seen The Hounds Below before. I gotta say, I was blown away. The place was packed, and for good reason. There's a lot of classic rock feel in this band, but it didn't feel old hat to me. Maybe it was the fact that I haven't really listened to anything else Jason Stollsteimer, but I was not prepared for his voice, his delivery, his maniacal conviction. He's assembled a Frankenband of awesomeness which is apparently changing frequently: Ben Collins (Lightning Love), Molly Jean Schoen (The Decks), Mick Bassett, and Ben Luckett were all there Saturday and it sounded amazing. Really, people, see this band.

Poor Scarlet Oaks came on after this bombastic set, and while I liked what they were doing, their quieter, more folky sound was sort of lost on me after what I'd just seen.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I know this is going to get lost here between a show review and my "hey go to these things" thing, but I'm going to give it a shot. I've got an idea for a kind of "band/new musician resource" section. Imagine you're a guitarist in a band and you want to maybe start an electronic side project. You'd like to learn some keyboard skills or maybe how to use Pro Tools. Come to the library and get some books, or maybe a DVD to show you. Anyway, my point here is, what would you want in a collection like that? Comments are welcome and encouraged.

Now some things to see.

This Friday is busy. Well, in my mind, there's two choices.

1. High-Speed Dubbing, which blew the crowd away at DIY, finally has a full-length release, entitled, Way of the World out on Loco Gnosis. The release party is this Friday at The Berkley Front. Spattoon and Extra Large Childe are also playing.

2. 52 Week High has a 7" coming out on Five Three Dial Tone Records, their second release and the show supporting it is free at the Pike Room. 52 Week High is a project of Keith Thompson's (Johnny Headband, Electric Six) and Jonathan Weier's and the tunes will be played live by Thompson, Weier, Steven Tuthill, Jon Babich, Mike Alonso and Pan!c.

You should also know that I'm doing my best to buy new national music that people in this town will like. Recent acquisitions include:

Anyway...

Have you heard that WDET has hired Jon Moshier back? He's got a new show called Modern Music that airs Friday nights from 9 -11 PM. He plays a good mix of new indie music and local music in a town and time that could really use this kind of thing. Also, and I do not take full credit for this view (thanks Leah, for making me see sense), this is a perfect time slot. All the people getting ready to go out can turn the radio on and listen to new music that you can't hear anywhere else on the dial. Join this Facebook group to be friends with the show. I'm assuming that the show will have it's own webpage soon. You can listen to archived shows here.

Don't forget that this weekend is the Detroit Rocks for Haiti benefit. This lineup is fantastic, and for a fantastic cause. It's also a great way to see some new bands.

Customer Appreciation Night @ The Magic Stick - 1/15/10

I like being appreciated, especially when that means free beer and food and music. This would be a good chance to catch some bands that I've never heard.

White Mystery - Ameobas - Kommie Kilpatrick @ The Lager House 1/16/10

As soon as I read that White Mystery was a brother/sister act and that they're both redheads, I was sold. And then I listened to them, and was sold...more. Front woman Alex White has got the pipes and her brother Francis has the rhythm. The Amoebas hail from Grand Rapids and from a listen of the tracks they have on Myspace, they've got the sneering punk style down. Lyrics you could holler and a beat you could bob your head or pogo to. I've already professed my love of Kommie Kilpatrick here once, and I'm going to do it again. Simple, snotty and funny, they're a breath of fresh air in the Detroit punk scene. All in all this is a well-matched lineup, and worth spending your Saturday on.

I've had a lot of new visitors in the last few days and I would like to say, "Welcome"!

Also, for those who don't know what this place is, here's a little rundown. This is a blog run in association with the Ferndale Public Library. Awhile back, I got the idea to start introducing local music CDs into the library's collection. They're labeled so that people know they're getting a local artist's work. Up there near the top of the right column is a current list of all the local CDs we have.

If you are a local musician, label or fan please feel free to send me CDs. I've had donations mailed to me or simply brought into the building. We do buy what we can, but are on a limited budget. Please mail CDs to:

What a weekend. I spent New Year's Eve at the Magic Stick where I finally saw Kommie Kilpatrick. This is the kind of band you didn't know you needed to hear until they start yelling "get punched in the face tonight!" and you feel this weight leave you as you laugh and yell along. I also saw Secret Twins who everyone's been talking about. I really dug them. Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor rang in the new year with their song "2009," which was perfect and Silverghost finished off the night with a bang.

Friday I went to the Elbow Room for the second night of Mittenfest IV. While it's always hard to get yourself out the door to an early show (especially after New Year's Eve), once I got to the venue and heard Tim Monger's solo set, I remembered why I came. The community of musicians in Ypsi is tight-knit and friendly and the mood is contagious. Seeing old friends play together and be amongst a crowd that is happy to see that happen just feels good.

Tim Monger played with a newly assembled band. I was super happy to hear that he is working on another solo album. Next up was Ghost Heart, from Grand Rapids. They set up the stage with two drummers facing each other and a bicycle wheel between them. The result was visceral and rhythmic. Probably the most unique thing I saw the whole weekend.

After a dinner break, I came back in time to see the Juliets. What they do has been dubbed chamber pop, and it consists of well-crafted songs played by excellent musicians. Can't wait for their album.

As 10 PM arrived, I was in for the long haul. I stationed myself at the front of the stage and prepared to have my face blown off by awesomeness. Silverghost refreshed my fuzzy memory of the night before. Their new songs "I Want to be Your Star Child" and "Little Baby Fell Into a Music Machine" are great and I hope there's some kind of CD that I can get for the library so you can all hear them! Next, Lightning Love came on and played all my favorites. After that, Champions of Breakfast put the hurt on my dancing feet. They've got a new song too that has something to do with a cybernetic arm. And finally, Great Lakes Myth Society played. At shows like Mittenfest, you can barely hear the band sing over everyone singing along, which is a testament to how well-loved these guys are. After some dancing and good-bying, it was off to get some rest before the next day of Mittenfest began.

Saturday, I was back at the Elbow Room by 5 PM to hear Nathan K. His jokes and stories are just as entertaining as his music. Again, I headed out for some dinner and got back to see Greg McIntosh's solo set. At one point he invited members of Misty Lyn and the Big Beautiful up to sing a song with him and I captured it on video. After some tweaking I'll upload it and link. From 9 PM on it was no-holds-barred excitement for me. First, Black Jake and the Carnies, who I haven't seen in probably close to a year, gave everyone a lesson in crabgrass. Jake's light-up banjo, the balloons, and Joe's dancing out the devil brought the energy WAY up in that place. They covered "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and a Misfits song (I can't remember which!) and finished up the set with "Ypsitucky," the chorus of which you can learn and belt out before the song is over. Next was Jim Roll who is known mostly as a producer around these parts, but who is also an excellent guitarist, bassist and song-writer. I had never seen his band before and really dug the bluesy set. After that, Drunken Barn Dance played like they were headlining at Woodstock. The energy and the love in that room when Scott Sellwood is onstage is palpable and catchy. I feared for The Friendly Foes, who were up next, because it was a hard act to follow. I need not have worried. They took the challenge and beat it to a pulp, and people noticed. I found it particularly great to look around and see all the folkies banging their heads along to the band. Nice work Foes. And finally, Child Bite came on and finished the job. From the bizarre face paint to the spastic dancing to the trips out into the audience and beyond they tore the place up.

I just found out today that Mittenfest IV made $12,000 for 826 Michigan. That is truly amazing.

Stuff I Liked This Year

Not wanting to be left out of the end of year list-making fun, here I am with my uncategorized, nebulous list of...stuff I liked this year.

Gigs in the Library

In 2009, the FPL had two events that featured live music by local bands. Way back in June, our open house was a resounding success in part because of High Speed Dubbing and The Motor City Midwives. They helped shake expectations of what a party in a library looks like as well as booties. Then in October, our packed Halloween Party featured local favorites Carjack and The Beggars. Both sets embraced the spirit of Halloween and entertained young and old alike.

Don't worry. In 2010, we'll be trying to do more of this kind of thing especially after the new building is open.

It Might Get Loud

If you're like me then you have almost no idea how music actually works, which is why I found this film fascinating. Even if you are capable of creating music, you will love this movie. Three very different guitarists tell stories about how they got where they are today. I think my favorite part was watching the "cool guy" mask melt right off of Jack White's face as he and The Edge watched Jimmy Page play "Whole Lotta Love". Pick it up at the library! It's DVD-2902.

Albums

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix (CD-1554)

I talked about this album back in August which was (by my calculations) several months before everyone on Earth knew them from the Cadillac commercials. This album still makes me happy and is also on everyone else's year-end list.

Real Estate by Real Estate (soon to be added to the collection)

This is just good, mellow surfy feeling rock. There's minimal lyrics, so you can throw it on when you're reading or working and let its happy vibe flow over you.

My Old Familiar Friend by Brendan Benson (CD-1595)

I won't blab about this record any more than I already have. It's good. It will improve your life.

Fests

This was the year of the fest. Some people think this is a bad thing. I disagree for several reasons which I will lay out for you right now. 1) It's an excellent way to see a lot of bands. This seems obvious. 2) It's an excellent way to see bands you have never seen before. So maybe you could never be convinced to go to the Lager House to see say...Timmy's Organism. But oh hey, they're playing the Super Duper Amazing Fest right after a band you love. You stay and see them and see that they are great. Awesome. 3) It's an excellent way for the infrequent show-goer to catch up. This past year was for me a mostly car-less one, so I missed out on a fair number of "normal" show. The -fests made up for some of that.

More Information than You Require by John Hodgman

I should be clear and say that the incarnation of this that is really on my list is the audiobook. Hodgman, who is best known for portraying the PC in the Mac ads, also happens to be a brilliant, clever comedian. He brings along Jonathan Coulton (Yale buddy and comedic musician), Paul Rudd, Sarah Vowell and more to the hilarious audiobook version. Be advised that this book is often spontaneously hilarious and that listening to it may be hazardous to your public image and/or job.

MLA

This year I was lucky enough to have a poster session at the Michigan Library Association's Annual Conference. My presentation on Developing a Local Music Collection was well received and I hope to hear that lots of other libraries will be giving it a shot. You can see my handouts here.

More CDs Going Out to Patrons

Since taking over the (difficult) job of purchasing music for the library, I am proud to say that there has been a noticeable increase in circulation of CDs. I don't have exact numbers (I'm still learning the labyrinthine software we use to look at these sort of stats), but there has been an upsurge. In addition, the positive comments about the CD collection have been increasing as well! I hope to continue to bring our patrons music they love as well as new music to discover in the new year.

Lady Gaga

It doesn't seem very indie or hip to like Lady Gaga...and I don't care. I can't help but love her take on dance music as well as dance music culture. Her videos are the most entertaining I've seen in years and her live performances managed to shock this jaded consumer.

Creative Marketing and Packaging

This year I saw a lot of creative marketing happening not only in the local scene but in national music as well. Sufjan Stevens included a View Master slide with his latest release, BQE. Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor hand illustrated each CD of their self-titled disc. Even big stars like The Police put out a vinyl LP and had the intelligence to include a free download of the mp3 tracks. Local acts have been doing this kind of thing for awhile now, recognizing that music, in its digital format is frequently undervalued and often stolen. Giving the consumer something tangible and unique to covet is a solution many have resorted to. They give the music away, usually as a free download when you purchase that limited edition, 180-gram, swirled green and white LP with hand-illustrated sleeve, and therefore still manage to make a little money while you get the songs for "free". It's smart, and I hope that national acts and (more importantly) labels wise up to this concept.

I've finally gotten around to resizing and tweaking my pictures from The Recital's last show. Here's hoping Santa brings me some photography gadgets so I can expand my repertoire and technique. Or a car. Yeah Santa, a car would be good.

I know every blogger lives to make their top ten of the year list. I'm here to tell you not to expect one from this chick. I have a hard time doing those things, and I haven't prepared anything. But if December 27th rolls around and I'm cozy in my apartment thinking all things 2009, I might eke out a few things. What you can probably expect is that sometime shortly after the new year, I will put up a list of things I'd like to improve in the blog and the local music collection. Yeah, so I'm a bit partial towards Mittenfest. I fully admit it. But there are a ton of things going on in the next few weeks that I feel I should tell you about. Here are two of them!

2nd Annual Benefit for Rotaract

You know I love me some Chris Bathgate. Plus its a benefit! And it's tomorrow! Forget Christmas shopping at 10 PM for last minute stocking stuffers. Listen to some sweet music and help keep some kids warm this winter.

8th Annual Detroit Sounds and Spirits Olde-Fashioned Holiday Spectacular

This one kind of seems like a no-brainer and now that I know what day it's actually happening, I'm probably going to be there. In years past, this has been a frenzy of holiday cheer with multiple stages, quick changes and awesome performances.

Once again, fair audience, I have slacked. I went to see the Recital, Thunderbirds Are Now! and Zoos of Berlin last Friday, took pictures and have yet to upload them. One of these days there's going to be a massive picture entry, but today is not that day. The Majestic Cafe was packed with fans there to witness The Recital's final show. I picked up their "Succulent Leftovers EP" for the library which will be on the shelf, well, in a little while.

Mittenfest is happening in 23 days. The full schedule is here. This festival holds a special place in my heart as it where I really feel this whole music + library = awesome thing began about a year ago. I collected a ton of CDs at Mittenfest last year and first started telling people about my idea. I took a ton of pictures with my then new camera, and this thing entered a new phase. A lot of the same bands that played last year are playing this year along with new ones. If you've never been to the Elbow Room, this is the way to see it: crowded as hell, non-stop music blaring and all for charity.

This Friday there's a gigantic show at the Stick called Pure 11. It looks like it's sponsored by Pure Detroit and has 11 bands. They are: The Silent Years, Phat Kat Big Band, Black Lodge, Prussia, Charlie Slick, Sisters Lucas, Ohtis, The Great Fiction, Catfish Mafia, The Juliets and Scarlet Oaks.

Thanksgiving Hangover

I hope no one else was prepared to go back to work today. And by prepared, I actually mean, prepared. Like have all the stuff they need to do their job. Because that's where I stand today. That's why you get a photo-less blog today good readers.

On Wednesday, I drove to Ann Arbor to see Great Lakes Myth Society, The High Strung and Zoos of Berlin. It was an awesome show and I got lots of pictures which I will post in the next day or two. I even got video of GLMS lapsing into "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" in between songs. I'm going to try my hand at some sound editing before I subject you to that, so keep an eye out.

The next big thing on the horizon (in my opinion) is Mittenfest. This is a four day festival held in Ypsilanti's own Elbow Room December 31st through January 3rd that benefits 826 Michigan. I went to this thing every day last year and it was an amazing mix of the variety Michigan's music scene has to offer. So here's my official opinion on this year's Mittenfest: Don't miss it!

Biggest Bar Night of the Year

First off, I want to thank all the MLA conference attendees who dropped by my poster session last week. Your comments, enthusiasm and curiosity not only made me feel great but also renewed my passion for the local music project at the library.

Secondly, I was lucky enough to catch the Juliets, Social Studies, Kittens Ablaze and Tim Monger at the Lager House on Friday. There's nothing like going out with your friends when you've had a successful week and there's nothing worrying. Pictures at the bottom.

Halloween and Beyond

I'm not sure if I should start with the positive or the negative...I'm gonna go with negative, so I can get it out of the way. I'll keep it short.

Saturday, I chose to spend my Halloween at the Crofoot in Pontiac. The line-up as well as the concept was great. So you can imagine my disappointment when during Bars of Gold (covering Talking Heads) a mosh pit erupted behind me. Long story short: it got worse during the next two bands (Prussia as Velvet Underground and The Cold Wave as Weezer)and I and my friends went to find someone to complain to. I got some serious attitude from the door guy and what amounts to a shrug from a security guy. So, we left. Pits are fine for shows where they are appropriate. They are not appropriate when women hit the floor, glass is broken and the people around them get so mad that they leave the venue. Also inappropriate: security simply watching it happen and waiting for blood to be spilled. Nice job, Crofoot. I can think of two people that won't be coming back.

On to the positive. Despite the terrible crowd, the music was awesome. The School of Rock covered Kiss and it not only adorable to see, but quite good! Makes me wish I had stuck with guitar lessons. Next I saw Silverghost as Devo. I'm not sure I can even articulate how fun this was. The costumes were great, the attitude was dead-on and the music was perfect. You'll see what I mean when you get to the pictures.

Then there was Bars of Gold as The Talking Heads. These guys knew which songs to play. They sounded great, and their front man had David Byrne's mannerisms down to a T. Prussia played a really good set as Velvet Underground, and the needn't have worried about mellowing out the place. The last band I saw was The Cold Wave as Weezer, and what I was most excited to see. They did not disappoint. With their matching outfits and classic Weezer song selections, they could not go wrong. Ryan Allen's apologies for Weezer's last three albums cracked everyone up.

Halloween Party Recap

Wow. Wow! WOW!

The Library's Halloween Party was a resounding success. Over eighty kids entered our costume contest, so if you do the math...that's a lot of people.

The Beggars outdid themselves. A few of their songs were rewritten to be holiday and audience appropriate. There was "Stop, Drop, Tootsie Roll" and "Snickers, Skittles and Twix". They were in costume and threw treats to the audience. It was a brilliant show, and proved that you don't need booze to enjoy a good rock show.

Carjack not only put on an awesome show, but he really made the night by bringing along some fantastic lighting. The place looked more like a venue than a library meeting room. Carjack donned a wolfman mask and put on his trademark energetic show. The crowd even demanded an encore!

The best part about this for me is that it happened in a library full of people of all ages. The event brought together a ton of people, with one purpose: having fun. And it looks like it was successful. Thanks to everyone who helped out with this: candy donors, the bands, volunteers, staff members, and attendees!
